Live Food for Parrots?!?

Parrots eating live food??? What does this mean? Does this mean feeding them crickets or mealworms or mice? NO, NO, It means feeding them food that is fresh enough that it still contains many of the rich phytonutrients. If your parrot were living in the wild, the good Lord provides a smorgasbord of foods for them to choose from. Do they live on seeds or pellets in the wild? No, they spend their time eating branches, grains, leaves, stems, fruits, flowers. shoots, berries, nuts and other vegetation. Phytonutrients are nutrients derived from live foods and are rich in antioxidants. And, antioxidants greatly enhance your bird's immune system and protect cells from damage.

We feed live food in a variety of ways. Sprouts are considered live and contain all the benefits of the plant in one sprouted seed. Click here to read more about sprouts. Feeding live branches is another way to add nutrient rich food to your bird's diet. On this page, I am encouraging you to either buy or grow edible flowers for your parrot. This is a great source of live food. You do need to study on poisonous flowers vs. edible flowers and do not feed any flowers that are toxic to your bird.

Here in Arizona, it is easy to grow Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), Calendula also known as Pot Marigolds(Calendula officinalis), Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus), Impatiens (Impatiens wallerana), Johnny Jump-ups (Viola tricolor), Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale), Daisies (Bellis perennis), Marigolds (Tagetes signata pumila), Passion Flower Vine (Passifloraceae), Roses, Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Pansies (Viola X Wittrockiana). There are also many of the flowers of vegetable and fruit trees that are edible if you can bear picking them before the goodie develops.

In addition to adding health to your parrot's diet, the colorful flowers make a great toy for an afternoon!
