What is the difference between a Cinnamon and a Pineapple Green Cheek?

At first glance, many folks believe you can tell the difference between a Cinnamon Green Cheek and a Pineapple Green Cheek by the amount of red on their chests. This does not always work though with all Cinnamon Green Cheeks. The bird on the right is a Cinnamon; whereas the bird on the left is a Pineapple. They can look a lot alike at times.,,,and sometimes, I have seen families pay for a Pineapple and they have really gotten a Cinnamon. Here are some ways to tell them apart below. |

Now with most of the Cinnamon and Pineapple Green cheeks, you can tell them apart by the amount of red, but if the Pineapple in one without a lot of red and the Cinnamon is one with a lot of red, then it gets difficult. Here are 2 babies from our home where you can easily tell the difference. |

Pineapple Green Cheeks have yellow under their wings. Cinnamon Green Cheeks have a lime green color under their wings. Remember that a Pineapple is really just a Cinnamon gene combined with a Yellow Sided gene. I like to say that their top half is the Cinnamon and their bottom half is the Yellow Sided. That is why we see the yellow coloration under the wings of the Pineapple. |

Both Pineapples and Cinnamons have red tales that are more of a muted color when compared to a Normal or Yellow Sided, but the tail of a Pineapple has a halo of lighter color on each feather. The Cinnamon tail is more singular in color. |
